The Amarillo Area Adult Literacy Council provides basic instruction in reading, writing, math and spelling to adults over 18 years of age performing below the fifth grade level. Volunteer tutors provide all instruction. Services can be provided on a one-on-one basis and can help prepare clients for employment or post-secondary classes.

The Hi-Plains Poetry Society explores dimensions of poetry and how poetry relates to and improves our lives. Each meeting members study and critique types of poetry. When time allows, members read a short poem they have created. The Poetry Society meets in Kingswood United Methodist Church at 2 pm on the third Saturday of most even numbered months - February, April, June and August. Texas High Plains Writers is one of the oldest writing organizations in the country and will celebrate their Centennial Anniversary in 2020.
